Vocabulary Explosion

  • Avrie's language skills have really increased over the last week. She can repeat any 2 syllable word and is putting verbs/adjectives and nouns together into 2 word sentences. She knows a few 3-4 word sentences stemming from "I want". I need to look back at Nolan's babybook and see where he was at this age. I know he was talking in full sentences by 2 so they must be pretty close.
  • We went to the park this morning and weren't there more than two minutes when a group of kids from a nearby alternative school came over for their gym class. If the kids were listening (and aren't they always?!) they learned an extensive 4-word vocabulary and countless ways to take God's name in vain.

ugh, isn't that just sickening? i was at the y today and i heard a preschool kid telling his teacher that one of the other said the "b" word. i don't know exactly what he meant by that, but i did question whether i really want ayla to go to preschool next year!

i do think it is inevitable. and if kids aren't exposed to it at home with trash talking parents and tv, they notice it even more i think. but so far nolan hasn't said anything and he's pretty inquisitive about new words, etc. i think of all that i learned in school at a very young age and i'm appalled.

unfortunately it is the WORLD and you cannot shelter them from IT..or one day they will have a big awakening..but you can teach them right and wrong fortunately.

It's amazing what we hear when we open our ears, huh? I tend to tune it out a lot, but when you are hearing through your kids ears it's really eye opening. Kekoa and Gavyn's Grandpa M. is the worst offender. He chuckles when I tell the boys to not listen to their Grandpa.
